For this to be effective, intentionality is essential. We must critically evaluate our self-concept, beliefs, and values to ensure they guide us in cultivating a strong and meaningful willingness to help others. This also requires us to overcome the self-sabotaging belief that being prosocial or loving is naïve and impractical in a narcissistic and Machiavellian world. Genuine prosocial individuals do not buy and follow this self-defeating mindset; rather, they distinguish themselves from the crowd, rather than blending into the common herd. A prosocial stance is foundational to our next yearning, peace (psychological and physical safety).
Providing Psychological and Physical Safety
Creating an environment where people feel safe is crucial. Psychological safety allows individuals to express themselves without fear of judgment or repercussions, while physical safety protects their well-being. When people feel secure, they are more likely to open up, share their thoughts and feelings, engage in meaningful interactions, and learn more efficiently. These two types of safety explain the state of peace. Peace is not possible without the certainty of a prosocial setting. The antonyms of peace include conflict, war, discord, turmoil, strife, hostility, and chaos. There can be no peace – psychological and physical safety – without the guarantee of a loving or prosocial mindset and setting. Moreover, peace is a precondition to well-being and happiness.
Promoting Well-Being and Joy
Fostering well-being and joy in others can transform their outlook on life. Positive affirmations, celebrating achievements, and sharing moments of happiness promote a sense of well-being that leads to greater life satisfaction and fulfillment. Joy is contagious, and by spreading it, we contribute to a more positive and vibrant environment. Contentment is essential for being present with and appropriately responsive to the obligations and demands of daily life without drama or distractions. Our studies indicate that peace is fundamental to well-being and happiness; peace and peace of mind are prerequisites for happiness and well-being. This state of contentment fosters creative, interesting, and engaging environments.
Engaging in Interesting and Productive Activities
Engaging in productive and enriching activities with others can strengthen bonds and create lasting memories. Whether it's collaborating on a project, participating in a hobby, or exploring new interests together, these shared experiences foster a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. Such activities enhance individual growth and nurture collective progress.
Meaningful Purpose Psychology describes this ideal state as doing interesting things with interesting people, at interesting places, for noble ends. This state is achieved when the prerequisites of prosocial behavior, psychological and physical safety, and contentment are met. Our studies have shown that the pursuit of noble ends significantly contributes to happiness. All these elements—love, peace, happiness, and engagement—contribute to our ultimate goal: prosperity, or building a positive legacy.
Helping Others Build a Positive Legacy
One of the most meaningful contributions we can make is helping others build a positive legacy they can be proud of. By encouraging them to pursue their passions, supporting their endeavors, and recognizing their achievements, we can instill a sense of purpose and direction. By aiding others in crafting a legacy, we enable them to leave a lasting impact on the world. This legacy is not only financial but also includes intellectual, experiential, spiritual, and existential prosperity—living a life filled with meaning and purpose.
Each of us has the potential to be the meaningful experience others need. Through our actions, we can create environments that promote growth, joy, and fulfillment. By embodying the principles of Meaningful Purpose Psychology, we can make a difference in the lives of others, helping them—and ourselves—find true purpose and contentment.
What it Takes
To achieve these ideal states or yearnings, we must first overcome limiting psychological and social barriers. While this might not be new information or an innovative call to action for many, empirical evidence shows that despite available solutions, the bulk of humanity still struggles to implement and benefit from them. It is both a paradox and an irony. I already mentioned how cynicism and doubt can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. This is why Meaningful Purpose Psychology came to be: to help people understand why problems persist despite solutions being available, and how to overcome the obstacles with confidence and vitality. Humanity does not lack solutions; rather, it lacks the understanding and ability to apply them effectively.
